The Galactic Environment of the Sun: Interstellar Material Inside and Outside of the Heliosphere
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interstellar material (ISMa) is observed both inside and outside of the heliosphere. Relating these diverse sets of ISMa data provides a richer understanding of both the interstellar medium and the heliosphere. The galactic environment of the Sun is dominated by warm, low-density, partially ionized interstellar material consisting of atoms and dust grains. The properties of the heliosphere are dependent on the pressure, composition, radiation field, ionization, and magnetic field of ambient ISMa. The very low-density interior of the Local Bubble, combined with an expanding superbubble shell associated with star formation in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association, dominate the properties of the local interstellar medium (LISM). Once the heliosphere boundaries and interaction mechanisms are understood, interstellar gas, dust, pickup ions, and anomalous cosmic rays inside of the heliosphere can be directly compared to ISMa outside of the heliosphere. Our understanding of ISMa at the Sun is further enriched when the circumheliospheric interstellar material is compared to observations of other nearby ISMa and the overall context of our galactic environment. The IBEX mission will map the interaction region between the heliosphere and ISMa, and improve the accuracy of comparisons between ISMa inside and outside the heliosphere. P.C. Boundary Conditions of the Heliosphere
Radiative transfer equilibrium models of nearby interstellar matter (ISM) are required to determine the boundary conditions of the heliosphere from astronomical observations of nearby stars. These models are also constrained by data on the ISM inside of the solar system, including pickup ion, anomalous cosmic rays, and in situ He data. The two best ISM models give semi-empirical filtration fact...
متن کاملConstraining the Heliosphere: The Need for High-Resolution Observations of Nearby Interstellar Matter
High-resolution ultraviolet observations of nearby bright and faint stars are required to evaluate changes in the past and future galactic environments of the Sun, and the possibly impact of these changes on the interplanetary environment at 1 AU (around the Earth). The boundary conditions of the heliosphere and interplanetary environments are constrained by the characteristics of the surroundi...
متن کاملThe Solar Galactic Environment
Combined heliosphere-astronomical data and models enrich our understanding both of effects the solar galactic environment might have on the inner heliosphere, and of interstellar clouds. Present data suggest that N(Fe+)/N(Do) increases toward the upwind direction of the cluster of interstellar clouds (CLIC) flowing past the Sun. Cloud kinematics and abundances suggest an origin related to a sup...
متن کاملThe Sun’s Journey Through the Local Interstellar Medium: The PaleoLISM and Paleoheliosphere
Over the recent past, the galactic environment of the Sun has differed substantially from today. Sometime within the past ∼130,000 years, and possibly as recent as ∼56,000 years ago, the Sun entered the tenuous tepid partially ionized interstellar material now flowing past the Sun. Prior to that, the Sun was in the low density interior of the Local Bubble. As the Sun entered the local ISM flow,...

Interstellar material surrounding an extrasolar planetary system interacts with the stellar wind to form the stellar astrosphere, and regulates the properties of the interplanetary medium and cosmic ray fluxes throughout the system. Advanced life and civilization developed on Earth during the time interval when the Sun was immersed in the vacuum of the Local Bubble and the heliosphere was large...
